FBL Foundation Partners with Newark Hospital

The Frederick B. Lacey Foundation was honored to participate in the Veterans Day Celebration at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC). We were extremely excited to speak to senior administrators and hospital staff who have been providing excellent care and support to the Newark community. We reflected on the sacrifice and service of Frederick B. Lacey, a World War II veteran, federal judge and a distinguished lawyer, and so many more who have fought and defended our freedom. We also shared our gratitude for the partnership with NBIMC that allowed us to host an internship for two high school students from West Side High School this past summer. The internship gave the students an opportunity to learn from the professionals at NBIMC and gain valuable skills and experience for their future careers. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with NBIMC and supporting our veterans and our community

FBL Foundation Awards Annual Scholarships to Six Newark Seniors

On 23 June 2023, The FBL Foundation awarded six scholarships totaling $15,000 to 6 outstanding graduating seniors from West Side High School. Judge Lacey, who was born and raised in Newark, credited much of his success to the education he received in the Newark public schools.  He was especially proud to be a graduate of West Side High School, which he attended before distinguishing himself at both Rutgers University and Cornell Law School. During the graduation ceremony, FBL Foundation President John Lacey spoke of Judge Lacey’s strong support of education and his love for West Side High. Here, Mr. Lacey announces the essay contest winners and presents the scholarship certificates.  We wish to thank West Side High Principal Akbar Cook for inviting us to speak at the graduation. We have now awarded $40,000 in scholarships over the last 3 years to graduating seniors from West Side High School.

The third annual Frederick B. Lacey Scholarship was awarded to:

We wish to express our appreciation to the Connell Foley LLP law firm.  Through our partnership, Connell Foley and the Lacey Foundation were able to sponsor three rising seniors from West Side High School who did great work as paid summer interns at Connell Foley’s Newark, New Jersey Office.  In addition to gaining valuable work experience in a professional office, the students also participated in seminars to develop core life skills, including career planning, resume writing, networking and preparing a personal budget.  We wish Isaiah, Faithia and Favour well as they enter their senior year of high school.

FBL Foundation Partners With Newark Law Firm to Host Summer Internship

The Frederick B. Lacey Foundation was formed to honor a native of Newark and beneficiary of the Newark Public School System, The Honorable Frederick B. Lacey.  From an early age, the future attorney, federal prosecutor and federal judge recognized that the only way to ensure success in his life was to get a good education.  It began in elementary school with his dedication to basic reading, writing and arithmetic, the foundation of virtually everything in our society.  From his early education at what was then known as the Alexander Street School to his graduation from West Side High, young Mr. Lacey recognized that the more he studied, the more choices he would have later on in life.  It is with Judge Lacey's legacy in mind that the Frederick B. Lacey Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the education of Newark's public school students and to giving those students the best opportunity to succeed in their own lives. To that end, the Foundation will establish free tutoring programs for elementary students in the Newark public schools as well as college scholarships to graduating seniors in Newark's public high schools.

The Frederick B. Lacey Foundation
Supplemental Education & Tutoring Program

Helping Many Students, One Child At A Time

The Frederick B. Lacey Foundation is dedicated to the fundamental principle that every child in every inner city public school deserves the opportunity to succeed.  To guarantee that opportunity, the Lacey Foundation is providing a comprehensive free tutoring program for inner city children.  The program is designed to ensure that every student is fully proficient in reading, language arts and arithmetic by the fifth grade.  During each tutoring class, each student is given access to a computer with advanced educational software that will equip each student to make significant and measurable progress toward that student's target level in reading, language arts and mathematics.  Multiple tutors will be present to keep each child focused on that day's personal goals, and to ensure that the learning experience is positive, substantive and fun.  At the end of each class, each student will perform the "look-back", seeing what he or she learned that day.  Such a review is intended not only to boost each child's self-esteem, it also serves as a review that will "lock in" that day's progress.

The goals of the Frederick B. Lacey Supplemental Education Program are achievable, but the need is great and we cannot do it alone.  In the wake of a pandemic that has devastated the education of inner city children the most, the time to act is now.

We need your help now more than ever for infrastructure, computers, software licensing and other incidental costs.  When the program is fully operational, it is expected to boost the education of more than 10,000 school children in more than 40 schools.

Please help us contribute to the future of today's children who need our help the most!
