OUR MISSION

The Frederick B. Lacey Foundation's sole mission is to advance the education of young people in the City of Newark by offering college scholarships to deserving public high school seniors and by providing funding for after-school education programs to ensure that all students in the Newark public schools are able to read and write at grade level.

OUR INSPIRATION

The Frederick B. Lacey Foundation was formed to honor a man who dedicated his entire professional life to helping the cause of justice, and to teaching others.  Born in Newark, New Jersey, Judge Lacey became the first in his family to attend college, and then to attend law school.  He went on to become one of the giants in the legal community, serving as the top federal prosecutor for New Jersey and then as a federal judge.  In doing so, he earned a well-deserved reputation for always being the best prepared person in everything he did.

At all times, Judge Lacey recognized that the entire foundation for his success was the early education he received in the Newark public school system and the academic scholarship he received that allowed him to attend Rutgers University.  Unfortunately, today's students in Newark face many challenges that prevent them from doing well in school.  This, in turn, keeps students from reading and writing at their grade levels and increases dropout rates.  For those who do succeed in the Newark public schools, their education often ends there because they can't afford to go to college.

The Frederick B. Lacey Foundation is designed to provide supplemental education programs with both the education and encouragement that will keep students from dropping out of school, and instead will encourage them to seek more education, which will then lead them to have more choices in whatever career they wish to pursue.
